  • Morning fire at the Chiang Mai post office

    The local precinct superintendent, Pol Colonel Chuwit Kongkaew, says a fire, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, broke out this morning (Sunday) in the local post office.  The incident happened at the one-storey post office building of the San Khamphaeng branch. The fire, which occurred at around 7am, took fire-fighters 30 minutes to get under control at the two year old building.

Ban Muang is reporting that the man’s Thai wife heard a single shot ring out at their house on the Rattanakosin Road in Chiang Mai. The woman ran to a bedroom where her husband was dead from a bullet wound to the right temple. Police found the gun still in the dead man’s hand.

    PHOTO: The New Paper 57 year old Denison Seah from Singapore was killed in an accident yesterday morning (July 1) while on a casual ride in Chiang Mai. He had lived in the northern city for the past three years. The Straits Times out of Singapore reports that he was a competitive cyclist who had taken part in numerous regional competitions for more than 20 years.

    15.5 kilograms of heroin is a serious amount of illicit narcotics. Six Nepalese and one Indian national have been accused of being members of a transnational drug-trafficking syndicate, They’ve been transporting drugs by having people swallow dozens of capsules containing heroin and were arrested last week. The Nepalese suspects were identified as Singha Bir Gongbotamang, Sudarshan Thapa, Prasad Gurung, Suresh Tamang, Abashesh Gurung and Kare Gurung while the Indian national was identified as Lal Gurung

    Doi Tao, south of Chiang Mai, is where a five year old has found a giant mushroom, known locally as ‘hed jan’. Local villagers from the Ban Ko Luang, Pong Thung in Doi Tao were astonished when a five year old local, called Bell, turned up at home with an enormous mushroom on his shoulder that he says he collected from the forest. Chiangmaicitylife.com reports that the mushroom was identified as hed jan, an edible mushroom that usually grows on good soil in clumps
