Cobra Gold skews military focus away from China
By Wasamon Audjarint Against the background of China’s increasing power and assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, the United States is seeking to intensify Cobra Gold, the largest regional joint military exercise, that is annually hosted by Thailand. “I believe that Cobra Gold should look for ways to increase the complexity and scope of the exercise every year because we work closely with Thai allies in military space,” ADM Harry Harris, Commander to the US Pacific Command, told reporters at the Defence Ministry on Thursday.

The final search – ‘Ocean Infinity’ looks for MH370
An oceanographer from Australia’s national science agency CSIRO is expressing optimism that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will be found within a month after a new search effort kicked off last week. The private company Ocean Infinity has begun its contribution to the search for MH370, the single largest in aviation history. The flight disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 with 239 people on board.

Tropical storm ‘Tembin’ weakens but rain still forecast for the weekend
Storm Tembin has been weakened by cold wind, but is still causing heavy rain along the east coast of the southern region and rough sea conditions in the Gulf of Thailand, while cool weather and light rain covered the rest of the country. The Meteorological Department issued a weather update today stating that Tembin had degraded into a low-pressure area covering the Gulf of Thailand by Tuesday afternoon. Phuketathon – 9,600 runners competing next weekend
The exciting running event – marketing itself as ‘Asia’s major running festival’ – Phukethon 2017, is being held on December 8-10 with plenty of running categories from fun run to full marathon at Sapan Hin Park. Bike crash kills a Chinese tourist instantly
At about 2 am this morning (November 1), Phuket police got a report of a bike crash on Chaofa East Road, just before the Dowroong Wittaya School intersection, where an Asian woman died instantly. At the scene, police found the damaged motorbike on the street with the rider, 31 year old Zhang Qimei, a tourist from China who appears to have lost control when turning at a curve and hit an electric pole. No drama for Phuket pilots in Taiwan
PHUKET: A website report this morning of a „dramatic near miss“ involving two aircraft on the ground at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport has come as a surprise to at least two of the pilots. Contacted by telephone in Taiwan early this afternoon, South African pilot James Pitman was clearly astounded by the report, saying that at no time was his aircraft anywhere near the China Airlines jet that had aborted its takeoff on Friday afternoon. „We were not even on the same runway,“ Mr Pitman told the Phuket Gazette, adding that after landing he was in routine contact with ground control and proceeded to the tarmac „completely normally“
