PHUKET: Police rounded up 84 suspected illegal fishermen from across the island yesterday through raids on the Phuket Fish Marketing Organization, the Patong area and various boats dotted along the Phuket coastline. “Officers were arranged into three teams and inspected locations where we guessed illegal immigrant workers might be found,“ said Phuket Immigration Superintendent Sanchai Chokhayaikij. On seeing the raiding officers arrive at the Phuket Fish Marketing Organization office, some illegal workers attempted to escape.

PHUKET: Lifeguards at Karon Beach, on Phuket’s southwest coast, staged a mass rescue of five tourists this afternoon after a large wave nearly swept a group of men out to sea. Two of the men were able to struggle back to shore without assistance, while the other five needed the help of local lifeguards. One of the men was pulled from the water unconscious and was pronounced dead after arriving at Patong Hospital.
