    PHUKET Governor Maitri Inthusut confirmed to the Phuket Gazette that he will approve the long-awaited bus service to start serving tourists arriving at Phuket International Airport. The new bus service – to launch with six buses departing the airport to provide a “hop on, hop off” service to the major tourist beaches down the west coast – has one final hurdle to clear: it must be approved at a provincial transportation committee meeting on Tuesday.

    PHUKET: Police arrested a drunk bus driver returning from dropping tourists off at the Phuket Airport last night after he clipped a truck near the airport and was chased down by the upset victim to the Thalang Museum. Sirisak Suksai, 48, was driving his pickup on Thepkrasattri Road near the airport last night when his vehicle was clipped by a tourist bus with the owner’s name – Charoenporn Kaewbuppha – on its side, said Thalang traffic policeman Suthee Maneesing. “The bus broke the right rearview mirror of his pickup truck,” said Sen Sgt Maj Suthee.

A complaint filed directly to police in Bangkok resulted in the sting operation on the City Health Care pharmacy, on Dibuk Road, near the junction with Soi Romanee, late yesterday afternoon.

    PHUKET: Villagers in Koh Lanta, east of Phuket, have appealed to the Krabi Press Club to help resolve health problems caused by the recent burning of rubbish at a landfill which they say local authorities have ignored. “We have asked the OrBorTor Saladan [in Koh Lanta] to solve the problem, but nothing has been done,” said Phakob Solaem, a local laundry shop owner. Smoke from burning garbage is causing respiratory problems, residents say, and the noxious smell from the dump permeates houses.

    PHUKET: Traders dealing in secondhand goods and discarded items are under scrutiny in the latest campaign to keep the island green. Officers from the Pollution Control Department are working with the regional Environment Office to ensure recyclables and heavy materials dumped at the stores are disposed of appropriately.     PHUKET: Police broke up a cockfighting match near a rubber plantation in central Phuket yesterday, arresting 16 men and confiscating two roosters and 220 baht found at the scene. The number of men attending the matches had grown steadily over the past few weeks, causing local residents to complain to police, who sent an undercover agent to discover the time and place of future matches. At 4:30pm yesterday, the officers raided the match in a forest in Pa Khlok, on Phuket’s central east coast.
