PHUKET: Popthum Lawtongkum of British International School (BIS), Phuket has been named as the winner of the 7th Junior Dublin Literary Awards for South Thailand. The contest promotes creative English language essay writing. Popthum, 16, came first with his submission using the theme One fine day.
PHUKET: Hotel operators are lukewarm to an effort by the Thai Hotels Association to lobby the government to limit the number of new hotel licenses it issues, saying the real problem is the number of accommodation establishments that operate illegally. PHUKET: Tourist arrivals to Phuket during the current low season are up year-on-year thanks largely to the increased number of direct flights from Australia and China, according to the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA). PHUKET: Friends of Michael Sand Andersen, a long-term Phuket expat who died in a motorcycle accident on August 26, will hold a remembrance gathering for him on Saturday, September 10. Mr Andersen, 39, died from injuries sustained when he fell off his motorbike on Soi Yodsane while trying to drive down Big Buddha Hill in Chalong during heavy rain.
