Junior literary award winners for Southern Thailand announced
PHUKET: Popthum Lawtongkum of British International School (BIS), Phuket has been named as the winner of the 7th Junior Dublin Literary Awards for South Thailand. The contest promotes creative English language essay writing. Popthum, 16, came first with his submission using the theme One fine day.

Hotel supply cap pointless for Phuket
PHUKET: Hotel operators are lukewarm to an effort by the Thai Hotels Association to lobby the government to limit the number of new hotel licenses it issues, saying the real problem is the number of accommodation establishments that operate illegally. Following reports that the association planned to lobby returning Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa to help develop the industry by limiting new hotel licenses in popular destinations, Phuket Tourist Association President Somboon Jirayus doubted such a measure could be effective in Phuket under current circumstances

Aussies, Chinese fuel Phuket’s green season: PTA
PHUKET: Tourist arrivals to Phuket during the current low season are up year-on-year thanks largely to the increased number of direct flights from Australia and China, according to the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA). PTA President Jirayus Somboon said current hotel occupancy rates in Phuket are higher than for the same period last year. Phuket tourist safety among top concerns: US Ambassador
PHUKET: Highlighting the role of wardens as her embassys eyes and ears in Thailand, United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney today affirmed that tourist safety was among the top priorities of her mission. Amb Kenneys comments came during a day trip to Phuket, which included a visit to the offices of the Phuket Gazette and a closed-door meeting with the islands top-ranking police officer, Maj Gen Pekad Tantipong. Speaking to the press at the Software Park on the outskirts of Phuket Town, Amb Kenney touched on a wide variety of topics, ranging from women in high positions of responsibility and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatras responsibility to her voters, to tourist safety in Thailand to Rohingya refugees

Phuket expats to remember fallen Dane
PHUKET: Friends of Michael Sand Andersen, a long-term Phuket expat who died in a motorcycle accident on August 26, will hold a remembrance gathering for him on Saturday, September 10. Mr Andersen, 39, died from injuries sustained when he fell off his motorbike on Soi Yodsane while trying to drive down Big Buddha Hill in Chalong during heavy rain.

Phuket Square plans Bangkok mall
PHUKET: Phuket Square, managers of Jungceylon in Phuket, will launch a 300-million-baht „lifestyle community mall“ on Sukhumvit Soi 20 in Bangkok during the first quarter of next year. The venture follows the company’s success with the Patong-based Jungceylon, it’s first and only other mall project. But the tail is not wagging the dog.
