Police arrest three foreigners for B30mn jewelry heist
PHUKET: Police have arrested four people in connection with the theft of 30 million baht of jewelry in Phuket yesterday morning while they were heading for the Malaysian border. Phuket Provincial Police Commander Chonasit Wattanavrangkul confirmed to the Phuket Gazette that the suspects were arrested by Trang Highway Police officers at a checkpoint in Sikao District, in Trang province.

Phuket Customs seize B21mn of illegal diesel
PHUKET: Phuket Customsofficials have seized 47,000 liters of smuggled diesel hidden on board twoTaiwanese boats off the east coast of Phuket Sunday. Officials estimated thetotal value of the smuggled diesel seized at 21 million baht. The two boats, the ChingChunFa 168 and the Chi Tsai 16, were seized one to two nauticalmiles north of Taphao Yai Island, on Sunday, said Rakop Srisupa-at, director ofthe Royal Thai Customs Investigations and Suppression Bureau, who was in Phuketto announce the haul yesterday.

PHUKET: Phuket tourism industry leaders are calling on the local media not to exaggerate in their reporting of the recent seismic activity in Phuket, as doing so could adversely affect the local economy. Phuket Tourist Association President Somboon Jirayus said yesterday that tourists from places like Japan and parts of Europe where earthquakes are common were more likely to view the tremors as a natural event that could happen at any time and were less likely to panic as a result. “Effective warnings and evacuation plans are the most important thing in maintaining confidence among tourists,” Mr Somboon said.
