PHUKET: Police arrested an employee of a Chevrolet dealership in Phuket after the man made off with more than 1.2 million baht of company cash. Somkit “Roon” Yukunthorn, a 27-year-old Phuket native, worked faithfully for about a year as a messenger for VST Autosales 2002 Co Ltd, the Chevrolet dealership on the bypass road.

Patong Beach water quality tests to take another two weeks

Phuket to push for higher taxi fares, despite Bangkok opposition
PHUKET: Phuket officials plan to ask for permission to raise the standard rates charged by metered taxis on the island despite the announcement by the Minister of Transport yesterday that no taxi fares would be raised anywhere in Thailand. “We believe that when Transport Minister Chatchart Sitthipan hears why we want to increase the fares, he may make an exception in our case,” said Jaturong Kaewkasi, Phuket Land Transport officer. Business operators win fight to keep shops at Phuket International Airport
PHUKET: Business operators of concessions at Phuket International Airport have prevailed in their battle to keep their concessions at the airport. Not only will they be allowed to remain at the airport, but they will be allowed to continue their business in the new airport terminal once it is completed in 2015, said Thammarawat Wongcharoenyut, one of the operators. The stunning victory followed a meeting yesterday at the Phuket office of Airports of Thailand (AoT), which operates Phuket Airport.

PHUKET: Ten Rohingya detainees escaped at dawn yesterday from a detention facility at the Immigration Office in Ranong, the popular visa run destination for many expats and tourists in Phuket. The incident is the latest in a series of Rohingya escapes from various facilities in the past few months. The 10 escapees were part of a group of 118 Rohingya detainees at the facility.
