Thai Navy admiral in Phuket clarifies navy role on Rohingya
PHUKET: The Phuket-based Commander of the Third Naval Area, Vice Admiral Taratorn Kajitsuwan, yesterday publicly affirmed the role of the Royal Thai Navy in handling the huge influx of Rohingya refugees landing along the Andaman coast. Speaking at a public conference at the Phuket Merlin Hotel in Phuket Town, V/Adm Taratorn said the Royal Thai Navy aims to provide humanitarian assistance to the refugees, who are fleeing violent persecution in their native Rakhine State in Myanmar. “We have to take good care of them according to the international treaties that we have signed with other nations, such as human rights laws.

German tourist dies after fall on rocks at Khao Lak
PHUKET: A German tourist with a heart condition fell on some rocks and drowned yesterday at Khao Lak. Mr Oberle Ovegov, 57, had spent the morning playing in the water with his wife. At about 2:30pm, as he was walking on some flat rocks that extend into the sea at Khukkhak, he became dizzy and fell, said Khao Lak Police Inspector Anan Kuaboonkaew.

PHUKET: Phuket City police yesterday made two arrests and seized more than 2,000 pills of ya bah (methamphetamine) and 102.29 grams of ya ice (crystal methamphetamine) after staking out a Phuket Town fire hydrant. Fresh wave of Rohingya refugees arrive south of Phuket
PHUKET: An estimated 200 Rohingya refugees landed on Koh Racha Noi this morning, as reports simultaneously flooded in of another convoy, carrying about 180 men, women and children, coming ashore at Koh Phra Thong on the Phang Nga coast. “We have received reports of about 200 men, women and children travelling in two open boats landing on Koh Racha Noi,” an officer of the Royal Thai Navy confirmed to the Phuket Gazette. “We have also received reports that another 180 Rohingya have landed on Koh Phra Thong, in Phang Nga,” the officer added.

Phuket Islamic Council calls for desperately needed essentials for Rohingya refugees
PHUKET: The Phuket Islamic Council is collecting donations at their office in Koh Kaew for the hundreds of Rohingya refugees being held in detention centers across Southern Thailand. The Islamic Council is asking for blankets, dried food and toiletries. Kitti Islam, a member of the Phuket Islamic Council, told the Phuket Gazette yesterday that the council has already received a lot of donations of food and clothes, but more are needed.

PHUKET: The annual Phuket Provincial Employment Office (PPEO) job fair began today at the Central Festival East shopping complex on the bypass road, with 3,538 jobs available for job-seekers. Phuket Vice Governor Sommai Prijasilpa declared the event open at 11am, and was accompanied by Phuket Democrat MP Raywat Areerob, Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander Arayapan Pukbuakao and PPEO chief Yawapa Pibulpol. “There are more than 80 employers at the fair, offering 3,538 jobs in 685 positions,” PPEO chief Yawapa told the Phuket Gazette.
