PHUKET MEDIA WATCH– World news selected by Gazette editors for Phuket’s international community Sword master behind Darth Vader, Bob Anderson, dies at 89 Phuket Gazette / News Wires PHUKET: English actor and fencer Bob Anderson, who portrayed Darth Vader in the original Star Wars saga, died on Sunday, the British Academy of Fencing announced yesterday. He was 89. Anderson, of Hampshire in southern England, was the stunt double for Darth Vader in ‚Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back‘ and ‚Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi‘, being one of the seven people who portrayed the famous sci-fi villain.

Russian woman dies in Phuket motorbike accident
PHUKET: A young Russian woman died when her motorbike was hit by a car early yesterday, making her the sixth road accident fatality in the first four days of the “Seven Days of Danger” holiday road-safety campaign in Phuket. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket Office (DDPM-Phuket) identified the deceased as 26-year-old Elena Kireeva. According to DDPM-Phuket, Ms Kireeva’s motorbike was hit by a Mitsubishi Pajero on Chao Fa West Rd in Wichit at about 6:30pm.

The company’s billionaire co-owner Mikhail Prokhorov spoke on national television on Tuesday to confirm that the first Yo-hybrid is scheduled to come out on sale in December 2012. Prokhorov had said in previous announcements that the goal is to manufacture and offer an eco-friendly vehicle for under $10,000 (approximately 31,650 Thai Baht).

Phuket aglow with tsunami memorial ceremony
PHUKET: A dignified silence settled over Patong Beach yesterday evening as hundreds gathered to light candles in remembrance of the people who were killed or went missing in the 2004 tsunami that devastated Thailand’s west coast. The Light Up Phuket memorial service was attended by Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha, Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) President Paiboon Upatising and Dutch Honorary Consul in Phuket Seven Smulders. The ceremony started at 7pm with a performance by Phuket Rajabhat University’s students, which was followed by the opening speech by Governor Tri.
