April tourist arrivals in Thailand up nearly 10%
Thailand’s tourism racks up 13,701,411 visitors arriving in the first four months of 2018 – a 14% increase, year on year. For the same four months last year the passenger arrivals increased 3.35%. In April alone arrivals were 3,092,725. This is up 9.38% year on year according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Permanent Secretary, Pongpanu Svetarundra.

Governor visits Pakbang Canal after wastewater released into Patong bay
Phuket’s Governor, Norapat Plodthong, visited Pakbang Canal and set a meeting with Patong Mayor, Chalermluck Kebsup, about the wastewater solution for the canal after rubbish and waste had been left without dredging for 2 years. The water released into Patong beach after this week’s rains, from the canal, is foul and stinks. The Governor said after the survey at the canal that the meeting agreed that the wastewater comes from the litter, green waste and dregs that’s built up over 2 years

Preparing to close down Maya Bay
The General Director of the Department of National Parks (DNP) visited Maya Bay yesterday, which is expected to close down for 4 months from the start of June. Thanya Neti Thammakul, along with his team, visited Koh Phi Phi Ley and Maya Bay yesterday (April 23) to follow up the readiness before closing down the island’s iconic tourist attraction for 4 months from June 1 – September 30 The closure is to give 4 months for the area to rehabilitate both onshore and offshore after officials found out that the coral reefs were severely damaged by tourism

PM appoints two new ex-politicians as advisors
The PM is starting to surround himself with more politicians and fewer Army people in the lead up next year’s planned election. The PM, who has always described himself as ‘not a politician’, is showing all the signs of strategically aligning himself with the right people to make him a choice as ‘outside PM’ should the new lower house not be able to choose a Prime Minister following the election.

Anti-coal protestors start hunger strike
A hunger strike was started today by two groups of protestors who say they will not eat until the government permanently cancels the coal-fired power plants in the South. A total 19 activists from Save Andaman from Coal and the Network of Songkhla-Pattani Residents Against Coal-Fired Power Plants kicked off their hunger strike in front of the United Nation headquarters in Bangkok. They are demanding the government put a permanent end to the proposed Krabi and Thepa coal-fired power plant projects A prominent member of groups opposing coal-fired power plants, said the protesters are pledging to fight the coal-fired power plant projects by putting their lives on the line

Krabi power plant public hearing went smoothly. Protesters boycot event.
More than 2,500 people attended the public hearing about Krabi’s proposed new coal power plant yesterday (January 28) with 1,150 police and army officers guarding the meeting and watching out for any potential protest activity. The 1,150 officers were guarding the area of the public hearing stage at Klong Kanan Sub District Administration Organisation office (OrBorTor), both in uniforms and undercover. “The officers guarded that area to ensure security from possible conflicts between the supporters and the people who disagree with the project, which has happened numerous times,” said Pol Maj Gen Boontawee Toraksa.
