    PHUKET: A consortium of four major travel organizations yesterday publicly voiced their doubt that top local officials fully support the ongoing multi-agency crackdown to clean up rampant corruption and “mafia” operations in Phuket. Top figures representing the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA), the Thai Hotels Association Southern Chapter, the Phuket Spa Association (SPA) and the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) called a press conference yesterday to voice their grievance. “We want to announce that we support the Department of Special Investigation [DSI], the Ministry of Tourism and Sports [MOTS] and two Phuket Vice Governors in their efforts to clean up Phuket,” PTA President Pong Suwannakarn said.

    PHUKET: A Phuket businessman and adviser to the Thailand Trade Organization turned around allegations of being a Patong extortion artist today, pointing his finger at a government official. However, Chart Chindapol was unwilling to name the official, who he claimed raked in 50 million baht a month, pocketing 3 million for himself. A letter accusing Mr Chart of “distressing, threatening and persecuting local entrepreneurs” was sent to the Phuket Media Association on July 23 and signed off by the Association for Honest Patong Entrepreneurs.

    PHUKET: The Phuket Gazette’s media partner organization Nation Multimedia Group (NMG) Plc has signed a comprehensive agreement of cooperation with Myanmar’s Eleven Media Group Co Ltd. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Yangon last Friday by Nation Multimedia Group chairman Suthichai Yoon and Eleven Media Group chairman and CEO Dr Than Htut Aung, is a precursor to the formation of a joint venture in a wide range of English-language publications in the near future. Both Suthichai Yoon and Dr Than Htut Aung pledged to combine their editorial and business efforts to benefit the peoples of both countries and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region with high professional standards and ethics.
