Local rains in Nan and Trat cause devastation – seven killed two missing
Heavy rains in northern Thailand and on the Cambodian border in Trat are causing local emergencies. At least seven villagers have been killed and two others missing after heavy rains triggered a mudslide from a mountain into their valley village in the Bo Klua district of Nan province this morning Saturday).

Childless couples in Thailand increase 300% in 30 years
Between 1987 and 2015 the number of childless couples in Thailand has risen 300 percent. Nattaya Boonpakdee, an official at the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), has attributed the increase in the number of childless couples to the cost of raising children, a perception that children are a burden, and the fact that many Thais are getting married at a later age and hence encountering infertility problems. “Back in 1987, childless couples accounted for just 6 per cent of total Thai families,” Nattaya said earlier this week.

8 million baht budget approved for Government Stray Dog Shelter
An 8 million baht budget has been approved for a ‘dog condo’ and landscaping at the Phuket Government Stray Dog Shelter in Suan Pa Bang Kanun, Thalang. Phuket Lifestock Office Chief, Surajit Witchuwan, spoke about the improvements to the government dog shelter, a shelter located on 4 rai with about 500 dogs that has been opened since 2003 and was identified with low hygiene standard.

Bottlenose dolphin washes ashore in Surat Thani
A Bottlenose dolphin’s carcass washed ashore on Laem Sai Beach in Surat Thani’s Chaiya district on Friday morning, said Tambon Phumriang municipality mayor Yodchai Phankhrut, as he led a team to inspect the animal. The two metre long male dolphin was estimated at 15-20 years old. The carcass had wounds at the tail and all over the body.

Chalong villagers being expelled from land
Villagers from Satonpoh Community in Chalong gathered at the Provincial Hall today (December 12) to file a letter to the Governor, calling for help for re-location after getting expelled from privately owned land. Somjin Chuchuay, the representative of the community, explained that the land was initially a tin mine. According to Phuket Provincial Industry Office, the land belongs to the government and the concession expired in1980 and was left abandoned until 2003, when the villagers started to move in
