Democrat Party brainstorms for ASEAN in Phuket
PHUKET: Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and other Democrat Party heavyweights are scheduled to chair a seminar to develop a “Phuket model” for tourism on the island tomorrow. The event, scheduled to begin at 1pm, is intended to boost Phuket’s preparedness for measures of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community, or AEC, which will take effect in 2015. Dubbed “Decide Thailand Together”, the gathering will begin at 1pm at the Simon Star Theater in Rassada, one of the three major transgender cabaret venues on the island.

Ferry sinks off Koh Lanta, 80km southeast of Phuket
PHUKET: The project to build a bridge between the two islands Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai took a soggy step backward yesterday morning when a ferry waiting to unload its cargo of construction materials to build the bridge started taking on water in the rough weather currently affecting much of Thailand, including Phuket. No injuries were reported in the incident. The partial sinking of the ferry occurred while the vessel was floating off the Sala Dan landing on Koh Lanta Noi, in Krabi province.

Oil slick endangers Krabi mangroves, clean-up ordered
PHUKET: Krabi authorities have launched a massive cleanup operation after a boat struck rocks and spilled a large volume of oil into the sea, resulting in extensive damage to protected mangrove forests in Neua Khlong District, about 130 kilometers east of Phuket across Phang Nga Bay. The spill was first reported at 9am Saturday morning. How much oil was spilled is not known, but one local in an affected area in Khlong Khanan subdistrict reported oil lining 10 kilometers of coastline, with an estimated 1,000 rai of mangrove forest affected.

Phuket villagers plea for new road
PHUKET: Tired of plowing through mud, every time it rains, in order to reach their homes, residents at Baan Nai Thon, on Phuket’s west coast, today filed a complaint at Phuket Provincial Hall to finally get the ball rolling on a road project that has stalled. About 20 villagers arrived the Damrongtham Center (provincial Ombudsman’s Office) at about 10am to file a complaint against their local authority, the Sakoo Tambon Administration Organization (OrBorTor). The complaint, addressed to Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha, requested that provincial officials investigate why the road has not been built, especially since a sign erected by Sakoo OrBorTor said that a road 420 meters long, costing 1.
