Whale shark search starts off Phuket
Yesterday (May 20) a team of officials led by Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Director-General Jatuporn Burutpat went in search of the whale shark that fisherman claim was alive after they freed it from their fishing nets. The searching covered 40 kilometres between Koh Lon, Koh Hey and Koh Bon. Binoculars, drones and echo sounding devices have been used in the search. On Saturday (May 19) officials at the Phuket Fisheries Port In-Port Out Control Centre (PiPo) says, “There were 13 boat crews on Sang Samut 3 fishing boat on which Somsamai Meejom is the captain. They departed from the pier on May 11 and scheduled to return on May 22.” “We were informed that the boat will be back early on May 18 at 10pm to transfer their catch back to land. We have not found any illegal actions.” “The issue about the whale shark that was brought onto the boat, this action is in contravention of the Royal Ordinance on Fisheries in Section and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives Announcement.

Trawler captains face fines after catching whale shark
By Pratch Rudijanarom and Salinee Prab The captains of two trawlers accused of having fished an endangered pregnant whale shark off the coast of Phuket potentially face a heavy fine of up to 3 million baht and confiscation of their vessels, according to authorities. Fisheries Department and Marine and Coastal Resources Department yesterday promised to take swift action against the captains of Saeng Samut 2 and Saeng Samut 3 trawlers, for their alleged violation of the Fisheries Decree and Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act by catching a whale shark. A tourist dive boat on Friday found the trawler Saeng Samut 3 carried on-board a whale shark, which later was found to be pregnant

Seven arrested in Phuket loan shark crackdown
Phuket Provincial Deputy Commander Col Sermpan Sirikong says, “We’ve arrested four male and two female suspects in a loan shark crackdown on May 15 and 16.” “The five male suspects are 41 year old Adiraek Henghoo, 21 year old Ratanapon Haemtong, 26 year old Taechit Eakkanaprat, 23 year old Chawankorn Sukpan and 38 year old Kittisak Wongsamai. Two female suspects are 27 year old Pilaipohn Taruaraksa and 29 year old Wimon Buaprapa.” “They were all arrested in Chalong, Thalang, Kathu, Patong and Muang Phuket areas.” “Suspects admitted that an interest rate is being charged on loans, over the limit by law, but they have never physically harmed any debtors. All suspects have been charged with offences relating to the Excessive Interest Rate Prohibition.” “We are continuing our crackdown on illegal loan sharks who try and charge exorbitant interest rates on gullible and vulnerable people,” said Col Sermpan Sirikong.

Three suspects arrested over April arson
A team of Phuket police and soldiers have arrested 18 year old Wiwat Singkaha, 19 year old Purachart Jitchamnan and a 52 year old woman known as ‘One’. Wiwat and Purachart were arrested at different houses in Mai Khao while ‘One’ was arrested at a house in Sakoo. Wiwat and Purachart were charged with arson while ‘One’ was charged with ‘instigation’, or by any other means, causing another person to commit arson.

Phuket’s Governor inspects coral area in Paklok – Marina proposed
The issue of potential damage to coral reefs has been raised after local residents near Koh Hei, in the Ao Kung area of Paklok, has been brought up with the Phuket Governor today. Along with conservationists, they worry that there will be damage to the coral if construction of a marina is started along with the dredging of a channel for boats to access the new facility.
