Saphan Hin teen gang member killed in Phuket drive-by
PHUKET: A series of violent incidents between two teen gangs culminated in one of the members being gunned down in the Saphan Hin area early yesterday morning. Jetsadakorn “Bank” Setnarm, 15, was shot twice in the chest and died while being transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital, explained Wichit Police Inspector Passakorn Sonthikun. “At about 2:30am Mr Jetsadakorn and fellow gang members were hanging around one of their houses in the Saphan Hin area when two of their rivals drove by on a stolen motorbike.

Phuket monks defrocked after being caught with drugs
PHUKET: Four monks and a lay worker at the well-known Wat Kajornrungsan on Ranong Road in Phuket Town were arrested Tuesday night after a tip-off led police to catch them with drugs. “We went to Wat Kajornrungsan after local residents reported to us that they suspected some monks were using drugs,” Phuket City Police Deputy Superintendent Prawit Engchuan told the Phuket Gazette. Descriptions supplied by the residents helped police apprehend the men.

Phuket loan shark, henchmen netted in raid
PHUKET: Crime Suppression Division officers arrested a Phuket loan shark and his six henchmen in a raid on a house in suburban Thalang late yesterday afternoon. Led by Maj Roongsak Maichandee and armed with a search warrant, the officers entered a house in Ban Muang Mai, off Thepkrasattri Road in Thalang, and arrested Yutthana “Tum” Dorkjan, 31, for running a loan shark operation under the name Tum Credit. The officers also arrested Surasak Tongyam, 19, from Uthai Thani; Artin Samit, 24, from Nakhon Nayok; Akekapong Rongharnkaew, 20, from Chiang Rai; Supakorn Polyium, 28, from Roi Et; Somkiat Sonmaneechoti, 28, from Nakhon Pathom; and Yutthapong Buanam, 28, from Phetchaburi.

Phuket hatchet-wielding thief still at large, motorbike recovered
PHUKET: A motorbike stolen by a hatchet-wielding man on the run was found yesterday parked at the Koh Kaew Post Office. The man, thought to be dangerous, is still at large. Police first encountered the man when they signaled him to pull over at a checkpoint in Cherng Talay on Thursday.

No fear of floods or landslides yet, says Phuket MET
PHUKET: Despite heavy rains flooding parts of Ao Nang and Krabi Town yesterday, officers at the Southern Meteorological Center (MET) in Phuket say today that there is no need to fear floods or landslides in Phuket just yet. Deluges in Krabi, across Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, damaged an estimated 20 houses and caused minor flooding up to 60 centimeters deep. The worst affected area was on the main road between Krabi Town and the fossil seashell museum in Ao Nang.

Tourism Minister: International licenses a must for Phuket car, bike rentals
PHUKET: Tourists will need to have a valid international driver’s license to rent cars and motorbikes, the Minister of Tourism and Sports announced on Saturday. The news came as Tourism and Sports Minister Somsak Pureesrisak sifted through a slew of issues facing the state of tourism in the Andaman provinces of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi at a meeting at the Radisson Blu Plaza Resort Phuket at Panwa Beach. “I have discussed the situation with the Phuket Land Transportation Office and they will take charge from here,” Mr Somsak said.

PHUKET: Tourist Police arrested two Chinese nationals in Phuket Town yesterday for working illegally as tour guides catering to Chinese tour groups. Phuket Tourist Police Inspector Urumporn Khundejsumrit named the two men as Hung Jin Tia, also known as “Mr Tawan”, 34, and Cao Jiandong, 40.
