Phuket tsunami memorial service honored by few
PHUKET: A somber air hung over the tsunami memorial service at the Tsunami Memorial Wall in Mai Khao this morning as about 50 people turned up to remember those lost to the killer waves that struck Phuket in 2004. Thai official figures state that the tsunami killed 5,398 people and more than 3,700 disappeared in the waves that day. Hundreds of them died or disappeared in Phuket.

Phuket Police chief transferred
PHUKET: Phuket Police Chief Pekad Tantipong will transfer out of the province following a nationwide reshuffle of commanders and superintendents released yesterday by Royal Thai Police Headquarters in Bangkok. Maj Gen Tantipong, who took up the Phuket posting in early May 2009, took the Christmas Day surprise in stride.

Laguna take top spot after demolition of the Phuket Leopards
PHUKET: Last year’s Island Furniture T20 champions Laguna Phuket faced the dynamic youth team of the Leopards in the season’s sixth match and the final league encounter of 2011 at the Alan Cooke Ground (ACG) on Sunday. A convincing victory was needed by Laguna if they were to move to top of the table going into the new year.

Dozens more remain missing and are feared to have been killed. The Kolskaya drilling rig sank in the Sea of Okhotsk, some 3,800 miles northeast of Phuket, Thailand while it was being towed by the ‚Neftegaz 55‘ tugboat, which was being led by the Magadan icebreaker from the Kamchatka Peninsula to Sakhalin Island.

Phuket golfers getting ready for Youth Games
PHUKET: The Youth Golf Club of Phuket has sent one young player to compete in the United States before preparing for the Phuket Youth Games to be held from May 28 to June 5 with 10 other members of the club. Jinjuta Thongtan, a student at Satree School Phuket, was selected to represent Thailand at the World Junior Golf Series to be held at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, which opens today and runs through December 24

Villagers mourn death of Plai Sang, 67
PHUKET: Villagers of Lam Tab District in Krabi, a 40-minute boat ride across Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, are mourning the death of one of their most respected members – 67-year-old Plai Sang. The bull elephant was caught in 1956 and is believed to have been a sibling of Plai Pra Sawet, a highly respected elephant that was caught and handed over to the care of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej that same year. “This is a big loss for the people of Lam Tab because Plai Sang was dignified,” said village chief Samran Nuansomsri.
