No drugs, no phones, Phuket Prison to gain ‚White‘ status
PHUKET: Phuket Prison is to be awarded “White Prison” status after regular inspections of the provincial detention facility declared it free from drugs and illegal mobile phones. Department of Corrections Deputy Director General (Administration) Somsak Rangsiyopas announced the news at Phuket Prison yesterday at the opening ceremony of a scout training program for young inmates.

PHUKET: One of the men named responsible for organizing a red-shirt rally near Nai Yang Beach yesterday has denied any intent of establishing a “red-shirt village” in Phuket. PHUKET OPINION: Common sense needed, not seawalls
PHUKET: Funding for projects to “combat” erosion along the Andaman coast through construction of seawalls, jetties and similar structures would be better spent on environmentally-sound projects like sand-dune stabilization, mangrove reforestation and better enforcement of laws that regulate shoreline construction. Trying to conquer the forces of time and tide is the quintessential exercise in futility. This is especially true along Phuket’s western coastline, with its strong southwest monsoon season currents and pounding wave action.

Phuket moves to set up Andaman-wide integrated disaster-response IT system
PHUKET: The Phuket Provincial Health Office (PPHO) is spearheading a project to set up an integrated information system to better coordinate emergency response efforts throughout the Andaman coast provinces in disaster situations. Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMAT), rescue personnel, communications experts, police and local administration organization officials met in Phuket Thursday last week to provide input into what the system would require. “We collated the working experiences of people throughout the Andaman region who are involved in responding to natural disasters, which includes coordination between government agencies and private-sector organizations,” said PPHO Deputy Director Wiwat Seetamanotch.

Aussie tourist dies of heatstroke in Phuket
PHUKET: An Australian tourist found unconscious by the side of the road near Surin Beach has died from heatstroke, Phuket rescue workers have reported. A Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organization rescue worker’s unit based at Layan Beach received a report at 2:39pm on Wednesday that a man had fainted by the road about 200 meters from Surin Beach. When the rescue workers arrived the found a group of tourists trying to help the man, who was still breathing.

Expert architect to deliver free Phuket seminar on ‘Seismic Design & Building’
PHUKET: Dr Amorn Pimanmas, Chairman of the Project Committee at the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) and alumnus of the University of Tokyo, will lead a free seminar on “Seismic Design & Building” at the Boat Lagoon Resort in Koh Kaew this afternoon. Jointly organized by the Phuket Architectural Society and the Phuket Real Estate Association, the seminar, to be held from 1pm to 3pm, is open to the public and aims to impart expert knowledge on how seismic events affect various types of constructions. Participants will also learn about the latest developments in earthquake-resistant design and building materials, as well as the best course of action during and after an earthquake.
