Pheu Thai’s Prompong inspects B4bn ’stolen‘ Phuket land
PHUKET: Pheu Thai Party spokesman and party list MP Prompong Nopparit arrived in Phuket yesterday to inspect 65 rai of land near Patong that is under investigation for having been illegally issued land titles. The land, located behind Freedom Beach on the southern headland south of Patong, was brought to the attention of the National Counter Corruption Commission after it was discovered there was an attempt to sell the 65 rai for about 4 billion baht – an amount equivalent to about US$125.78 million.

Phuket Prison ‚kingpin‘ suspected in huge meth bust
PHUKET: Police have arrested three members of a major methamphetamine trafficking ring operating throughout Phuket that is allegedly masterminded by a ‚kingpin‘ resident behind the walls of Phuket Provincial Prison, officials said today. Seized as evidence in the case was the biggest drug haul in Phuket in recent memory: 20,200 ya bah (methamphetamine) pills and 718 grams of ya ice (crystal meth). The scale of the operation was such that a press conference held this morning at Phuket Provincial Hall, was presided over by Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha.

New Phuket City Police chief to tackle drugs, traffic woes
PHUKET: Phuket City Police Superintendent Chonasit Wattanavrangku today met Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha to formally introduce himself and to deliver a New Year’s gift basket. At the 11:30am meeting at Provincial Hall, Maj Gen Chonasit said his priority since he started work as the Phuket City police chief on December 29 has been to ensure the safety of the public during the New Year’s festivities at Saphan Hin, Patong Beach and Karon Beach. “The safety precautions taken during the holiday period were successful,” he said.

Phuket records second day without death on the roads
PHUKET: Today marks the last day of the “Seven Days of Danger” holiday road-safety campaign. No fatalities were recorded in Phuket yesterday, Day 6 of the campaign, with the number of fatalities standing at six. According to official figures from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket Office (DDPM-Phuket) this morning, Day 6 ended with nine serious injuries in eight reported accidents, but no deaths.
