PHUKET: Phuket’s top officials have called an emergency meeting today to discuss new strategies for road safety at the Kor En curve on Thepkrasattri Road after an accident there yesterday killed one woman and an infant on a motorbike. The curve, on the main road from Phuket Airport to the main resort areas on the island and Phuket Town, was the scene of a fatal accident in 2006 that sparked a mob closure of the road and the ensuing 15-million-baht reshaping of the curve to make it safer. Tah Chat Chai Police Duty Officer Lt Col Watcharin Jiratikarnwiwat said he received a report of the accident yesterday at 5:10pm.
PHUKET: The sale of alcohol will be prohibited across much of northern Phuket tonight and tomorrow as six Tambon Administration Organizations (OrBorTor) go to the polls. Phuket Election Committee (PEC) Director Kittipong Thiengkunagrit confirmed that the “dry zones” will be the electorates of Koh Kaew, Kamala, Cherng Talay, Thepkrasattri, Mai Khao and Sakoo. In line with election law, the sale of alcoholic beverages within those electorates will be prohibited from 6pm tonight through to midnight Saturday.

Having defeated the tournament’s number three seeds, Soong-Jae Cho and Ji Sung Nam, both from Korea, Stevenson and Li faced the number one seeded Thai duo of Weerapat Doakmaiklee and Kirati Siributwong for the title. According to the RIA Novosti news agency, Russian health officials said mothers will be able to anonymously drop off their unwanted babies in order to provide safe conditions for the newborns as many of them are commonly left in garbage containers. The baby-boxes have an estimated cost of 10,000 euros ($13,750), and five of them have already been allocated in Krasnodar Territory, located in southern Russia
