More rain = more Dengue fever
The wet season has provided a spike in new Dengue cases around the Kingdom. The Disease Control Department chief says a total of 3,301 new cases of dengue fever have been reported nationwide during the past week. Dr Suwannachai Watanayingcharoenchai says the number of people infected with dengue was an average of 10,000 patients a month during the rainy season from June to September

11 year old Thai child bride sent back to Thailand
The 11 year old Thai girl, caught up in the middle of a ‘child marriage’ storm, has been sent back across the border to Thailand. The girl’s ‘marriage’ to a 41 year old Malaysian man caused a social media meltdown and strong negative response from human trafficking groups, human rights groups and the Malaysian government. A Malaysian social activist claims the Kelantan state government returned her to Narratiwat, southern Thailand, on Wednesday.

A 21 month old child has died after being repeatedly hit by his stepfather with a broom. The man has been charged with bodily harm causing death.

Small boats ’should’ stay at port due to the weather
The Phuket Marine Office has announced a warning for boats heading out onto the Andaman Sea from today until August 15. “Small boats less than 12 metres should not leave from port.” The announcement, issued yesterday (August 8), stated that due to the 2-4 metres waves in the Andaman Sea (translated)… Boats that are leaving from Phuket ports to Phi Phi Island in Krabi should be very careful when travelling in the sea. Boats less than 12 metres long ‘should not’ leave port.

Good news from dams in the north-east
Whilst provinces bordering the Mekong River, and areas in Phetchaburi downstream of the hillside dams, are all under threat from flooding at the moment, the situation is a lot better in the lower north-east provinces. The Irrigation department has issued assurances today about the water situation covering some 77 dams in the region

98 confirmed dead. Rescuers fear more as relief pours into Lombok.
International aid organisations are now seeking assistance some of the key groups get people onto the ground to start providing much-needed relief to the northern parts of the island. Following the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Indonesia’s Lombok Island on Sunday evening, rescue workers are actively searching the province to rescue and aid victims. According to The Guardian, Katy Flay, who was on holiday with her partner, told her brother authorities were demanding money before they would allow tourists onto rescue boats.

The survey was conducted on the Thaivisa website so partly reflects the aspirations and life of readers of the site. They report that a common theme on social media and forums is that Thais think of hooking up with or marrying farangs as their ultimate meal ticket. They are said to see dollar signs in their eyes and see the “hansum” foreigner as nothing more than a walking ATM to be pressed when needed and ignored like part of the furniture at other times
