Phuket very tolerant of gay lifestyles: Gazette poll
PHUKET: Phuket society is very tolerant of people with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) lifestyles, according to the results of the latest Phuket Gazette readers’ poll. The poll, run to coincide with the Phuket Pride Festival held in Patong late last month, asked readers: “Overall, how tolerant is Phuket society of LGBT lifestyles compared to other places you have lived in or visited?” More than three-quarters of readers overall (77.4%) thought Phuket society was either “tolerant” or “very tolerant”, compared with 8.

Cop killer caught in Phuket
PHUKET: Phuket City Police yesterday arrested an alleged hit-man and cop killer wanted in connection with two murders last year, one in Phuket and one in Trang. Samut “Moot” Keukgong, 44, was arrested by Phuket City Police at about 3:30pm at a snooker hall in Rassada, said the Phuket City Police report. Mr Samut signed a statement denying a charge of premeditated murder in the first case, claiming that he was acting in self-defense when he killed Sompong „Jack“ Inchao-na outside his home in Rassada Village 3 on March 24 last year.

Phuket police officer held for off-duty killing
PHUKET: A Phuket police officer and his brother are being detained at Phuket Provincial Court tonight after both were charged with accessory to murder over a fatal shooting in Phuket Town’s red-light district early yesterday morning. Phuket City Police Deputy Superintendent Jamroon Plaiduang told the Phuket Gazette that the shooting occurred at about 2:30am in Phuket Town’s infamous Phun Phol Soi 11. Pol Cpl Rachaporn Semaksorn, currently serving at Patong Police Station, and his brother Dechaporn arrived in the narrow street, pulling up on the opposite side of the alley where 21-year-old Ekkasit Sangangam was sitting on his parked motorbike.

Phuket Red Cross pumps up blood donation campaign
PHUKET: The Phuket Regional Blood Center (RBC) has stepped up it mobile blood collection campaign as blood stocks are dangerously low following the annual Songkran Festival last month, which resulted in a surge in road accidents in the region. The Phuket RBC, run by the Thai Red Cross Society, is responsible for collection of blood stocks in Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, Satun and Ranong as well as Phuket

Phuket workers present demands on Labor Day
PHUKET: Union leaders in Phuket yesterday demanded that the government initiate measures to reduce and control the soaring cost of living, which they insist has long outstripped minimum wages. The formal demands for pricing controls headlined a list of six demands presented to Phuket Vice Governor Sommai Prijasilpa at the island’s annual Labor Day Fair held at the Phuket Provincial Office of Labor Protection and Welfare in Phuket Town. Other key officials taking part in the event included Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) President Paiboon Upatising and Kittipong Laonipon, chief of the Phuket Provincial Office of Labor Protection and Welfare.

High-speed pile-up brings Phuket traffic to standstill
PHUKET: A pickup truck slid out of control on Chao Fa West Road in Wichit this morning, slamming head-on into another pickup truck and causing a multi-car pile-up on one of Phuket’s busy main roads to the south of the island. Eye-witness Teerachai Waiyakarn told the Phuket Gazette that at about 9:30am a white Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with Songkhla license plates was heading southbound when it crossed the center line near the Wang Talang Duty Free store
