    PHOTO: Facebook/Laguna Phuket Triathlon Firm favourites Michael Raelert of Germany and Amelia Watkinson of New Zealand successfully retained their titles in contrasting fashions in the Laguna Phuket Triathlon yesterday. 37 year old Raelert came from behind in the swim to stay neck and neck with arch-rival Anthony Costes of France in the concluding run before speeding up at the end to cross the finish line in 2:19.32 hours and complete a hat-trick of Phuket wins. Costes, who was runner-up to the German last year, again had to settle for second, in 2:20.29.

    The police inspector-general has issued two orders to transfer 10 Phuket police officers to inactive posts in Bangkok, causing dissatisfaction and affecting the morale of other officers. Four of the transferred officers were moved from the Patong police station amid allegations that their recent crackdown on a restaurant in the popular tourist town had affected the business of certain police officers in Bangkok. In the latest order, issued on Friday, Pol General Suchart Thirasawat, acting police inspector-general, transferred four officers to the Royal Thai Police Operations Command Centre in Bangkok

    The poor are getting poorer, while the rich are getting richer due to the government’s policy approach to welfare and social enterprise, according to academics who presented at a seminar on civil state policy held at Thammasat University yesterday. Official statistics show a trend in which the rich tend to get more benefit from the government’s policies than the poor, which is in sharp contrast to the policy’s intent to fight poverty, said Decharut Sukkumnoed, an economics professor at Kasetsart University. Decharut cited statistics from Office of the National Economics and Social Development Board, which indicated that the number of people below the poverty line increased by nearly 20 per cent in 2015-2016.

    Thailand’s goal to gradually eradicate plastic waste at sea by 80 million to 160 million kilograms a year by 2021, is expected to be affirmed by Jatuporn Burutpat, chief of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, at the upcoming Asean and China Sea Waste Reduction Meeting, to be held in Phuket on November 22 and 23. Jatuporn cited a 2010 study of 192 countries, published in 2015 in a US-based science journal. The study ranked Thailand as the world’s sixth largest contributor of plastic waste enters the world’s seas at 1.03 million tonnes per year

    An agreement has been reached by the Fisheries Department that the crocodile found in an old tin mine near Laypang Beach will be sent at Phuket Zoo next month. The Director General of Fisheries Department, Dr. Adisorn Promthep, said today (November 17) that, following the DNA test by Mahidol University, they found that Laypang is a mix breed between a freshwater crocodile and a saltwater one and it can’t be released back to the nature according to the Fisheries Regulation
